What is the difference between a psychiatrist, a psychologist, and a PMHNP, and which one do I need?

  • Psychiatrists are medical doctors (MDs or DOs) who specialize in diagnosing, treating, and preventing mental health disorders. They can prescribe medication, conduct psychiatric evaluations, and provide medication management. Psychiatrists are typically needed if you are seeking treatment for conditions that may require medication, such as depression, anxiety, ADHD, bipolar disorder, or schizophrenia.

  • Psychologists hold doctoral degrees (PhD or PsyD) and specialize in providing therapy, such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), talk therapy, and other therapeutic interventions. They cannot prescribe medication. Psychologists are best suited if you are looking for therapy or psychological testing and assessments to better understand your mental health.

  • PMHNPs (Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioners) are advanced practice providers with a Master’s or Doctorate degree in psychiatric nursing. They have the specialized training to diagnose mental health disorders, prescribe medications, and provide therapy. PMHNPs are well-equipped to offer a holistic approach to mental health care and can serve as your primary mental health provider for medication management and psychotherapy.

If you need both therapy and medication management, you may benefit from working with a PMHNP for comprehensive care.
